Hosting-aware Drupal PHP upgrades

Running an unsupported PHP version puts your Drupal site at risk and breaks as hosts drop support. I move you to a supported PHP version — with every module and theme checked for compatibility up front.

What's involved

A PHP upgrade with no broken pages

"Hosting-aware" means I check what your host supports and what your codebase needs, then upgrade in the right order so nothing breaks. Deprecations are resolved before the switch, not after your site goes down.

  • Compatibility audit of core, contrib & custom code
  • Resolve PHP deprecations and warnings first
  • Coordinate with your hosting environment
  • Tested on staging, then a clean cut-over
  • Fixed price, agreed scope — no downtime surprises

In depth

Why PHP and Drupal upgrades belong in one conversation

Drupal 10 and 11 require PHP 8.1 at minimum and run best on PHP 8.3. Many Drupal 7 estates still sit on PHP 7.4 or older — runtimes that no longer receive security fixes. Hosts sunset those versions on a predictable schedule, which means a site can stop deploying even when “nothing changed” in Drupal.

A hosting-aware upgrade starts with what your provider actually supports today and what your codebase can run tomorrow. Deprecated PHP functions in custom modules are fixed first; contrib modules are updated or replaced; only then is PHP raised on staging and regression-tested.

For Drupal 7 sites, PHP and core upgrades are usually coupled with a Drupal 7 migration because Drupal 7 was never designed for PHP 8. Treating them as one scoped project avoids paying twice for overlapping work. Hosting-only PHP bumps on D7 have limited headroom — see also Drupal 7 end of life.

Questions

Drupal PHP upgrade — FAQ

Which PHP version does Drupal need?

Drupal 10 and 11 require PHP 8.1 or newer and run best on PHP 8.3. Drupal 7 sites often sit on PHP 7.4 or older, which no longer gets security fixes — so a PHP upgrade often goes hand in hand with a Drupal version upgrade.

Will upgrading PHP break my Drupal site?

It can if done blindly — older modules and custom code may use PHP features removed in newer versions. A hosting-aware upgrade resolves those deprecations first and tests on a staging copy, so the live cut-over is clean.

How much does a Drupal PHP upgrade cost?

It's quoted as a fixed price after a short assessment of your Drupal version, PHP version, and module list — no open-ended hourly billing.
